Addiction affects the whole person: physically, mentally, and spiritually. While sufferers may try very hard to hide the fact that they have a problem, certain signs and symptoms of addiction usually become clear over time.
Unfortunately, less than 1% of the 23 million Americans struggling with addiction receive the treatment they need. In addition, men experience addiction very differently from women. We hope that raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of addiction will encourage you to seek help for yourself or a loved one.
Men and women experience substance abuse very differently, due to a combination of biological and sociological factors. Men are almost twice as likely to misuse illicit drugs and alcohol, have an increased chance of becoming addicted, and abuse substances because of peer pressure at a higher rate. They also may experience more severe withdrawal symptoms than their female counterparts.
The social factors affecting men also contribute to their difficulty in finding recovery. Men in the throes of addiction may hesitate to seek treatment because of the widespread belief that men should be strong on their own. However, asking for help can be a sign of true strength.
For those whose loved ones need encouragement to seek treatment, we hope that the following list of symptoms can be beneficial.
Usually, a dramatic change in behavior accompanies problematic substance use. Your loved one may begin to act in ways that are completely different from the man you know. Addiction’s impact cannot be overstated. In its grasp, extremely responsible men abandon their relationships and responsibilities to pursue drugs and alcohol. High achievers may begin to fall behind in work or school. Kindhearted men often seem more angry or irritable than usual.
